We looked at many paintings made by the artist Wayne Thiebaud. One of his common subjects are cakes in the bakery. When we looked at these we realized that the cakes are really just simple cylinders. We learned how to draw those earlier in the semester, so we were inspired to create our own cake drawings since we already knew how! We started our sketches with pencil, and used chalk pastels to color them in. 25.A.1d Visual Arts: Identify the elements of line, shape, space, color and texture; the principles of repetition and pattern; and the expressive qualities of mood, emotion and pictorial representat

The third graders created beautiful spring flower paintings this week in art. We started by reviewing positive and negative space. We then created our moon by tracing a circle and only coloring in the negative space around it. The next day we discussed organic and geometric shapes/lines. We decided that our trees should have organic free flowing lines for branches to make it look more realistic. after painting our tree and branches, we added flower buds using q-tips and paint. They turned out beautiful! 25.A.1d Visual Arts: Identify the elements of line, shape, space, color and texture; the principles of repetition and pattern; and the expressive qualities of mood, emotion and pictorial representation.
.We've been learning all about 3-D forms in art class. First we learned how to draw each form step by step using pencil, then we applied what we knew to create a small 3-D form still life drawing 25.A.2d Visual Arts: Identify and describe the elements of 2- and 3-dimensional space, figure ground, value and form; the principles of rhythm, size, proportion and composition; and the expressive qualities of symbol and story.
The Third grade students are learning about the color wheel. We looked at primary, secondary and intermediate colors. We then began to create a color wheel using watercolor paints. We had to pay special attention to the order of the colors when gluing them down. 25.A.1d Visual Arts: Identify the elements of line, shape, space, color and texture; the principles of repetition and pattern; and the expressive qualities of mood, emotion and pictorial representation.
In second grade we were introduced to warm an cool colors. In third grade we get to use warm and cool colors to create an awesome paper weaving! First we start by painting one piece of paper using only cool colors, we do the same with warm colors. The cool colors will be our strips that we will weave with the warm colors being our background. We also need to pay special attention to our measurements when we cut out all of our strips of paper so that it weaves smoothly. 25.A.2d Visual Arts: Identify and describe the elements of 2- and 3-dimensional space, figure ground, value and form; the principles of rhythm, size, proportion and composition; and the expressive qualities of symbol and story.
After learning about bilateral and radial symmetry this semester we used the website www.weavesilk.com to create some computer generated symmetry designs. In this program you can change the type of symmetry and color to make some beautiful creations. Everyone had a great time exploring what type of designs we could make. 26.A.2e Visual Arts: Describe the relationships among media, tools/technology and processes.
In art, we are learning the difference between positive space and negative space. A positive shape is a shape that's filled in with color (or paper) and the negative is the opposite, it's the space around it. We then cut out several positive and negative shapes using little multicolored squares of paper. They look really neat when placed next to each other onto a background. 25.A.2d Visual Arts: Identify and describe the elements of 2- and 3-dimensional space, figure ground, value and form; the principles of rhythm, size, proportion and composition; and the expressive qualities of symbol and story.
What is a tint of a color? What is a shade of a color? In art, a tint is a color diluted with white. A shade is the opposite, it has black added to it. We each chose a color to create four different tints, and 4 different shades. We used tempera paints and carefully mixed our colors. We then created a scale going from lightest to darkest. 25.A.2d Visual Arts: Identify and describe the elements of 2- and 3-dimensional space, figure ground, value and form; the principles of rhythm, size, proportion and composition; and the expressive qualities of symbol and story.
We all know how cool the texture plates are... we also know that creating monsters and robots are fun too... So we decided to do both! We made some really funny narrative pictures of creature. First, we drew our pictures in pencil and then finalized them in ink and then used the texture plates and colored pencils to give them some pizzazz! Everyone had a good time making up a weird creature to come visit us in the art room! 25.A.1d Visual Arts:
Identify the elements of line, shape, space, color and texture; the principles of repetition and pattern; and the expressive qualities of mood, emotion and pictorial representation Last year we were introduced to radial symmetry. We made simple radial symmetry drawings. This year we are making radial collages. We started by creating our shapes. For each shape, we needed three other identical shapes to go with it. After creating and cutting out our shapes, we arranged them in a symmetrical design onto our background paper and finally glued them down. They are Rad! 26.A.3e Visual Arts: Describe how the choices of tools/technologies and processes are used to create specific effects in the arts.
