Do you know that the art principle of pattern is the repeating visual elements such as line, color, shape, texture, value or image tends to unify the total effect of a work of art as well as create rhythm? The 4th graders at Leal are creating pattern designs with a minimum of 16 different patterns using markers. So far they look AWESOME! 25.A.2d Visual Arts: Identify and describe the elements of 2- and 3-dimensional space, figure ground, value and form; the principles of rhythm, size, proportion and composition; and the expressive qualities of symbol and story.

It's been an awesome 6 weeks! Have fun in drama and I'll see you in the spring!
In art we looked at abstract painting and talked about how the colors used within them evoke different emotions. We then chose different colored crayons and matched them up with the emotion we felt they best represented. We also drew an abstract picture showing the emotions we felt at the moment. 25.A.2d Visual Arts: Identify and describe the elements of 2- and 3-dimensional space, figure ground, value and form; the principles of rhythm, size, proportion and composition; and the expressive qualities of symbol and story.
More textures! Today we created a "bad hair day" using textures! We started by using a blank head template, and then using rulers and graphite pencils, we added all sorts of textures to create a bad hair day! 26.B.2d Visual Arts: Demonstrate knowledge and skills to create works of visual art using problem solving, observing, designing, sketching and constructing.
The 4th graders are gearing up for the future Boneyard Arts Festival! The festival isn't until March, but the 4th graders will be in drama during that time. We are going to be creating texture designs to display at The Urbana Free Library. We are incorporating pattern and value into our designs. Each student will have a unique design on display! 26.B.2d Visual Arts: Demonstrate knowledge and skills to create works of visual art using problem solving, observing, designing, sketching and constructing.
After looking at Jackson Pollock on the computer and doing an online Jackson Pollock paint program we created our own kinetic paintings. We placed paper in trays and used marbles dipped in paint to create abstract funky designs. You could use one, two or three marbles at once! 26.B.2d Visual Arts: Demonstrate knowledge and skills to create works of visual art using problem solving, observing, designing, sketching and constructing.
Today we learned about the artist Jackson Pollock. He was an influential American painter and a major figure in the abstract expressionist movement. He was well known for his unique style of drip painting. Using the Chromebooks, we went to a really neat interactive website where we could create our own virtual drip paintings. Next week, we will be making our own real life abstract drip paintings! The link for the webpage can be found at: www.drips.nalindesign.com 26.A.2e Visual Arts: Describe the relationships among media, tools/technology and processes.
In third grade we first learned about positive and negative space. This year, we are making negative space marker designs. We started by drawing at least 5 shapes on our papers. The only rule is you can ONLY draw in the negative spaces. We are making all sorts of funky and cool designs around our shapes and the results are really amazing! 25.A.2d Visual Arts: Identify and describe the elements of 2- and 3-dimensional space, figure ground, value and form; the principles of rhythm, size, proportion and composition; and the expressive qualities of symbol and story.
![]() In third grade we learned that monochromatic means the use of one color. This year in art, we are creating monochromatic collages! Each student gets to choose any ONE color they want. We then raided the magazines in search of this color. Once we have several different shades, tones and tints of this color we will glue them to tag board and rubber cement all the edges down. They look awesome so far! 25.A.2d Visual Arts: Identify and describe the elements of 2- and 3-dimensional space, figure ground, value and form; the principles of rhythm, size, proportion and composition; and the expressive qualities of symbol and story.
Welcome to art! My name is Beth Satterthwaite, the Leal art teacher. For the next six weeks we will be doing all sorts of fun and educational projects! I can't wait to get started!
