While Bridget Maloney's second graders were learning about the importance of observational drawings in the field of science, I introduced them to the famous artist John Audubon. Before the advent of photography, observational drawings were essential to the field of science. John J. Audubon was a pioneer in this field. His expansive collection of bird paintings based on observation are still praised and used today. We learned about his background and method of collecting birds for his paintings. We also looked a dozens of his paintings/prints and tried our hand at creating our own observational bird drawings.
